Saba Faisal’s Plea: “Don’t Call Older Women ‘Aunty’!”

Saba Faisal, one of Pakistan’s most respected senior actresses, recently spoke about an important social issue. During her appearance on Nida Yasir’s morning show, she discussed the need for better manners, especially when addressing women. Her words touched a nerve with many viewers, as she focused on a term that often feels disrespectful to some women: “aunty.”

Saba Faisal believes it’s crucial to teach children the proper way to address older women. She said that elders, particularly parents, should take responsibility for teaching children not only how to speak but also when and how to address someone based on the situation.

She shared that many women in the showbiz industry, particularly those who are older, prefer to be called “Aapa” as a mark of respect. These women, according to her, feel more comfortable being addressed in a dignified manner, especially in professional settings.

While speaking, Saba Faisal also touched on a common scenario where younger people, both in daily life and in professional circles, might casually call older women “aunty.” She pointed out that this habit can feel awkward and even slightly disrespectful, especially when the age difference isn’t very large.

Saba Faisal said, “No one should be called ‘Aunty’ in the workplace. It’s more respectful to call someone by their name or use terms like ‘Madam’ in formal settings.”

Another guest on the show supported this by sharing her own experience of working abroad. She mentioned that despite working with colleagues who were the same age as her children, they never called her “aunty.” Instead, they maintained a respectful and professional tone.

Smiling as she continued, Saba Faisal reinforced her point: “We should avoid calling any woman ‘aunty.’ It’s a small change, but it makes a big difference in how we treat one another.”

Her candid thoughts resonated with many viewers, who later expressed their support for her stance on social media. Respect in language is something that’s often overlooked, but as Saba Faisal rightly pointed out, it plays a major role in creating a respectful and positive environment, whether at home, work, or in public spaces.
