Pakistan’s batting line-up had a terrible time against England on the second day of the last test match at Rawalpindi. Having started the day at 73/3, Pakistan lost wickets at regular intervals and ended the session at 187/7. Captain Shan Masood, with Saud Shakeel, put up some fight but fell short by a whisker to take Pakistan out of trouble as Shan went for a score of 26. Saud has managed a good fighting 72 and is holding an end under siege as the rest have fallen in a batting collapse.
Things had begun rather shabbily for Pakistan’s as they lost opener Abdullah Shafique for only 14 runs. Saeem Ayub and Kamran Ghulam did not last long, and at 73/3 at the end of Day 1, Pakistan were in a spot of bother. English spinners Shoaib Bashir and Rehan Ahmed made good use of the conditions there; Rehan took three wickets, and Shoaib two.
It was not so much smooth sailing for the English team in their first innings match against Pakistan’s spin attack. The choice of batting first by the team captain, Ben Stokes, did not serve the purpose; they were bowled out for 267. The stunning six-wicket haul was by Pakistan star Sajid Khan, while the rest of the wickets were divided between Nauman Ali and Zahid Mahmood. Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley were off to a pretty good start, but no one else really wanted to join in except Jamie Smith on 89.
Now having an 80 run deficit ahead of them, Pakistan’s lower order has quite a lot to do in trying to bridge the gap and attempt to have any sort of competitive total on this Test match, as the teams are still trading punches and yawing in different directions, each side trying to take charge, with the spin bowling dominating the pitch.
