Escalating clashes in South Lebanon: Killing of journalists and a Refugee Crisis
In recent escalations, the Ministry of Health has confirmed three journalists were martyred in Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon. Ghassan Najjar, Mohammad Reda, and Wissam Qassem, journalists staying at guest houses in the town of Hasbaya, have been killed, which has been spared thus far as the town has been bombarded at about 3 a.m.
This tragedy occurred as part of a wave of other attacks that martyred five journalists, among them Reuters correspondent Issam Abdullah. Israeli Attacks against journalists already have been branded a “war crime” by Lebanon’s Information Minister, with at least 18 journalists from six different media outlets among the casualties.
Escalating Casualties; Blocked Refugee Routes
These aggravating attacks have not only targeted the journalists but have also encroached the refugee crossing corridors along the Syria-Lebanon borders. Lebanon’s Transport Minister Ali Hamieh explained that due to Israel’s attacks, the Jdeideh crossing has closed down with only one crossing in northern Syria remaining available for use. UNHCR spokeswoman Rola Amin remarked that the assaults have now barricaded the exits for the 430,000 people internally displaced who wish to reach the border from Syria and seek refuge there.
The current war has seen utter destruction: videos recorded damaged cars with ‘Press’ marked on them and journalists remember the fear during the early morning air attacks. As tensions escalate, voices calling for the safety of journalists and civilians increase around the world.
