SNGPL and SSGC filed in writing with OGRA and sought a 54 percent hike in Gas price for the next fiscal, which is meant to fill wide revenue gaps. The watchdog has fixed public hearings pertaining to the two proposals and, accordingly, scheduled the OGRA hearing of SNGPL on November 5 and that of SSGC on November 8.
In comparison, Karachi-based SNGPL has estimated a shortage of PKR 20.85 billion in terms of revenue, which also includes PKR 480 million for the LPG air mix project. As much as PKR 64.16 per MMBTU, or an increase of 3.66%, is needed for this purpose. Karachi-based SSGC has estimated its shortage at PKR 140 billion and is expecting a 53.5% increase, or a hike of PKR 669 per MMBTU, to raise the average price from PKR 1,251 to PKR 1,920 per MMBTU.
It is just one of the many applications where the biannual gas price adjustment process is followed, whereby OGRA assesses and adjusts the gas price according to projected company expenditure and revenue requirement. So, if the proposed price hike is accepted, that shall affect both the residential users and the commercial users too, and government intervention should define the final rates to be charged on various heads.
For now, it waits for the regulatory decision that will give direction in their fiscal soundness as well as their pricing during fiscal year 2025 for the two gas companies.
