Veteran actress Asma Abbas has spoken at length about an important chapter of her life, revealing that after marrying at the tender age of 23, she was cut off from working in the showbiz arena for 18 years. In a candid conversation with journalist Maliha Rehman, Asma spoke of her career, marriage, and how her struggles in the personal front made her daughter Zara Noor Abbas face quite a lot of issues in showbiz.
Asma Abbas said her husband was already married when they got married, and he was a serving army colonel then. She was aware of it, nor ever did she ask her husband to separate from his first wife. She said, “My husband never loved the showbiz industry; that is why he confined my acting career after marriage.”.

For 18 years, Asma avoided the entertainment industry, mainly because of her husband’s disgust at it and frequent transfers for military service. In time, his views on the world of entertainment softened, and eventually he granted permission for her to resume acting.
Asma, talking about her daughter Zara Noor Abbas, said, “Zara had made a great number of friends here in the industry, but she soon learned some hard lessons about trust and betrayal. Asma advised that Zara, like many newcomers, thought everybody in the industry was her friend but soon realized the harsh realities of showbiz.
Asma also points out the fact that she did not receive any recognition from the industry. Although she gave a brilliant performance in serials like Chupke Chupke, she did not receive an award for the same. She says that although the whole cast of Chupke Chupke received some honor, neither was she nominated nor did anyone invite her for the award ceremony.
However, Asma is optimistic that eventually, good things will come her daughter’s way and she will get all the recognition in the right time from the industry, just like everybody expected from Zara Noor Abbas. Conclusion: Asma further added in her interview that she had never placed even a slight restraint on her daughter against showbiz because, no matter whatever the case, she had always been in her freedom to choose whatever she wanted.
