Israeli forces claimed yesterday for the second time this year to have assassinated Hezbollah’s purported future leader, Hashem Safi al-Din, in an airstrike last month on Beirut. The airstrike was allegedly directed at Hezbollah positions in the Lebanese capital, but Hezbollah as of yet has neither confirmed nor denied the claims.
Reports from the international media believe Israel attacked the fortified positions of the militant group Hezbollah in southern Beirut, targeting some high-ranking commanders. Among them are some that Israel believes were Hashem Safi al-Din, who was scheduled to become the new head of the group after its previous leader, Hassan Nasrallah, and the head of Hezbollah’s intelligence directorate, Ali Hussein Hazima.
This is not the first time Israel has said that it carried out an operation like this. The Israeli military recently declared that it had struck Safi al-Din on the outskirts of Beirut International Airport, but Hezbollah would not verify this. In a recent statement, the Israeli military asserted, “We can confirm that about three weeks ago, a strike in Beirut killed Hashem Safi al-Din, along with other key Hezbollah commanders.” It also paid attention to the fact that Hezbollah’s intelligence headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut was the target—one considered to be the heart of the group.
Of course, the Israeli military claimed to have reached the high command of Hezbollah by stating that “We have reached Nasrallah, his successor, and Hezbollah’s top leadership.” That according to Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, who also added that anyone who would be threatening Israeli citizens would be addressed.
Inter alia, Hashem Safi al-Din participated in many negotiations of Hezbollah lately and frequently addressed the microphone instead of Nasrallah, who did not come for security reasons. It’s worth adding that although Israeli boasts produced rather serious rhetoric, Hezbollah has made no official statement to confirm the information; thus, it is up to doubt; observers are already watching in expectation for subsequent events.
