The highly respected figure of Justice Yahya Afridi is soon going to be the country’s 30th Chief Justice. He will take the oath on October 26, when he will become the first Chief Justice from the former FATA. Known for professionalism, straightforwardness, and fair judgments, Justice Afridi enjoys respect from his peers and lawyers alike.
Justice Yahya Afridi, belonging to the Adam Khel branch of the tribe of Afridi, was born on January 23, 1965, in Dera Ismail Khan. He hails from Kohat village in Babri Banda. His family and community served faithfully in the public sphere. Justice Afridi started early education at Aitchison College and Government College Lahore before pursuing an MA in Economics from Punjab University.
Later, he received his LLM degree from Jesus College, Cambridge University, on a Commonwealth Scholarship. Thereafter, after working as an intern in London, he returned to Pakistan, where he joined legal firms and started teaching at Khyber Law College.
He begins his career as an advocate in the High Court in 1990. Later on, he was appointed to be an advocate of the Supreme Court in the year 2004. Furthermore, Justice Afridi held the office of Assistant Advocate General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and acted as the Federal Counsel for the government.
Justice Yahya Afridi was appointed as an additional judge in the Peshawar High Court in 2010 and was later confirmed as a regular judge of that High Court in 2012. He made history by becoming the first judge from the former FATA to be elevated as Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court in 2016 before proceeding with his elevation to the Supreme Court.
Justice Afridi is known for his cool-headed nature and equanimity in the judiciary regarding lawyers in the court. He had the firm policy of not allowing lawyers to get in to unnecessary debates and interruptions in the cases presented before him. In April 2024, he recused himself from a sensitive case into alleged interference by the intelligence agencies in judicial matters on grounds of judicial independence.
Justice Afridi’s elevation is a landmark stride in the annals of Pakistan’s judiciary history because he represents the formerly marginalized regions of FATA in the country’s highest judicial office as he readies himself to assume the office of Chief Justice of Pakistan.
