New Zealand Women Claim Their First T20 World Cup Title, Defeat South Africa

When it came to the last match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, the New Zealand women’s team was finally crowned the champions after they beat South Africa by 32 runs. The match witnessed at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium provided a huge show of electrons by the Kiwi team using both bat and ball. South Africa’s captain, Laura Wolvaardt, had opted for field after she had won the toss.

But this decision equally did not turn out as anticipated. The Kiwi batters made full use of the opportunity and provided a competitive target of 158 for five in the allotted 20 overs. Opener Suzie Bates made 32 useful runs, and Amelia Kerr played a superb inning of 43. Brooke Halliday also came good, with the bat scoring 38. From the South African side, left-arm bowler Nonkululeko Mlaba enjoyed 2 wickets but couldn’t stop the Kiwi cricket team.

Needing 159, South Africa’s openers made a good start to put together 51 for the first wicket. Laura Wolvaardt top scored with 33 from 27 balls, while opener Tazmin Brits got 17. However, this was as good as it got for South Africa, as they let themselves down by not making much more of the advantage once the wickets began to tumble. However, the middle order could not sustain the momentum.

A few players who use lower digits as their numbers did not perform well, such as 9 Anneke Bosch, 8 Marizanne Kapp, and 6 Nadine de Klerk. The New Zealand bowlers, especially Rosemary Mair and Amelia Kerr, were formidable. Mair again bowled well, and Kerr moved to 3 wickets, and it was difficult for the batters of South Africa to handle the pressure. The losing side was South Africa, who really fought for the target but were able to reach only 126 for 9 in their 20 overs.

Amelia Kerr, who was the key player of the final match as she played with batting order as well as bowling order and scored 43 runs and took 3 wickets, was awarded Player of the Match as well as Player of the Tournament. It was wonderful, and her contribution was helpful in making New Zealand the first team to win. This victory is a great success for New Zealand, provided that the team has not been successful in achieving many victories recently.
