The party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced that it will not take part in the parliamentary committee’s meeting that has been recently established for the purpose of selecting the next Chief Justice of Pakistan. Today, at 4 PM, a meeting is set to take place in addition to the recently enacted 26 the Constitutional Amendment, whose object was to modify the appointing of the Chief Justice’s prism.
As per the published news in Dawn, the political committee of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has gone ahead to reject the vote of some party members who supported the 26th Amendment, which the party was opposed to, revealing an in-house conflict. PTI revealed that those members would face serious penalties, up to and including their expulsion from the party.
The party has also decided to issue show-cause letters to the other members who have recently disengaged themselves from PTI.
The amendment that has now become law following endorsement by both the Senate and National Assembly has interfered with the appointment of the Chief Justice of Pakistan.
Earlier, the position would be filled by the incumbent Senior Supreme Court Judge automatically. But because of the new legislation, a name would be chosen from among the three most senior judges by a 12-member parliamentary committee made up of the ruling and opposition members from both houses of Parliament, which will then recommend its choice to the Prime Minister instead. Following, the Prime Minister will send it to the President for final approval.
